[Art Inside] Chickens of Hawai’i, Spooky Ladies, and Clever Kraken

Hey there, Reader

I’m doing a ton of traveling right now, but I wanted to say hello and introduce the new format for the Infrequently Updated Newsletter, which I’ve finally decided to name [Art Inside] after the note I write on the envelopes when I ship my prints (“Do Not Bend— Art Inside”).

Do you have anything you’re interested in seeing or hearing about? Let me know! Just reply to this email; it’ll land right in my inbox.

This was started over the Pacific and finished over the Gulf of Mexico

I was very lucky to be able to visit Hawai’i for the first time this fall. What an extraordinary place! I got to experience the infamous feral chickens (and Red Jungle Fowl, of which this guy is a specimen).

Took a while to finish this piece— I was already on another trip by the time he got done. I love painting birds, but not gonna lie, feathers can be pretty complex!

The Wailing Wraith and the Sacred Spring

In September, my buddy Garrett asked me to illustrate the cover for an RPG adventure he cooked up for the second Knave Game Jam. I was happy to oblige.

If you’ve never heard of it, Knave is a game system with no character classes, and seems to be well suited for quick design and loose play.

Clever Diversion Posters got an upgrade

I don’t know if I’ll ever stop tinkering with this image. The depths of the sea got deeper, the ship got a little upgrade (did you know sailing ships are complicated to draw!?). Storm clouds got stormier.

The sock is still as dumb as it is enormous.

And, there’s a t-shirt version now, too

With Very Few Apologies to Shepard Fairey This is more philosophical than legal, and I might be ruled in the wrong if I get hit with a takedown, but whatever, I'll risk it while I make my little treatise on street art and soverignty. The thing is, pasteups and slaps are illegal, but they are a part of the urban landscape. Who do they belong to, and who gets to iterate on them? I would argue that once they are public, they belong to all of us.Who do the Hollywood Hills belong to? The lions were...

Happy Superb Owl 10! Right back where we started from…. Ten years ago I got out some ink and painted a barn owl while the Super Bowl was on, and decided to auction it off for charity. The project got some legs and I did it again, and again, and again, and now it has been a whole decade of Superb Owl paintings, and just about a thousand dollars raised for wildlife rehabs in cities (okay, mostly Kansas City) all over the country. I happen to be on the road this week, but I didn’t want this...
